Researcher: Marine Spatial Management

The Institute of Sea Fisheries, an institute of the Johann Heinrich von Thünen Institute in Hamburg, Germany, is looking for a Marine Ecologist or Fishery Scientist to work on integrated marine spatial management. The engagement is limited to the 10.04.2016 and 2/3 of the regular weekly working time. The candidate shall analyze the spatial distribution pattern of commercial fish stocks and their food using geostatistical methods and modeling to create together with other research groups of the Institute the technical basis for ecosystem-based fisheries management and to strengthen the consulting expertise of the Institute in this area.


  • a PhD in marine ecology, fish biology, or related subject
  • experience of participation in international working groups and projects
  • ability to interdisciplinary research cooperation
  • strong cooperation and communication skills
  • very good knowledge of biological and geo-statistical modeling and evaluation
  • very good knowledge of databases
  • extensive knowledge in the use and programming of R software packages and ArcGIS
  • publications in peer-reviewed journals
  • fluent English
  • experience in applying for external funding
  • willingness to participate in research and business trips
