The Institute for Coastal Research of the Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht invites applications for a Scientist Position (m/f) in the field of wave modeling, starting March 1st, 2014, or later and will be initially for three years. The place of employment in Geesthacht, Germany.
The successful applicants will have University degree in Physics, Mathematics, Physical Oceanography, Atmospheric Science or related disciplines. A background in modeling and programming, in particular ocean and/or atmosphere models is desirable. Good skills in scientific programming (FORTRAN) as well as working with computers (Unix/Linux) are expected, as well as good knowledge of the English language (written and oral). The successful applicant is also required to support in a number of already funded external projects in the field of wave modeling.
Specific tasks of researcher will include source code updates, development and test bed, set-up of a web-based source code library. Development and application of data-assimilation techniques, allowing assimilation of radar wave heights in numerical models will be part of the candidate’s activity. The research will be carried out in close cooperation with scientists of the institute for Coastal Research as well as with scientists from the German Hydrographic and Weather Services.
